For a very long time, I thought that wine subscription-type clubs were a tad snobbish and only for those who have too much money to spend.
That was until I met someone who had been using these subscriptions for several years. Then, I understood how they work and what you can do to make them work for you.
I thought I’d look into comparing the best online wine clubs further.
We must realise that the industry is extremely competitive, and everyone is trying to get a bigger slice.
With that a given, we now need to look at how many programs of this type are around. A recent report from Which magazine looked at the top half a dozen.
But there are many more, many of which I have never heard of. I will no doubt look at more of them, trying to find the best online wine club, if indeed there is one.
You need to be aware that once you sign up for whichever company you feel you would like, you wait for the email or post—whichever you choose as your communication method.
The next thing you are waiting for is the promo offer. Most of these are worth taking advantage of, as you can get up to a third and sometimes more of the piece of wine that you order.
I am looking at the wine clubs that I have used to give you as much information about them as I can. I will look out to find if there is a standout club as I search and find out which has the best wine club deals online.
The Wine Society is recognised as the world’s oldest wine club. It was established

The Wine Society is a cooperative, so members, not shareholders, make this a success story.
It has a £40 joining fee, with £20 coming back to you on your first order. Their range of wines covers from budget wines to several hundred pounds for a bottle.

Having been a member since around 2020, I can testify to the great quality of their wines.
Tony Laithwaite’s love of wine and travels to Bordeaux led him to establish the Lathwaite Wine Club, which has been around since 1969. He spends his summers working in the vineyards and, in his words, lugging home the local wine for family and friends.
Eventually, it became a major company, Direct Wines, including Avery’s, Virgin Wines, and The Sunday Times Wine Club.
Direct Wines Ltd pioneered the model of taking wines directly from the producer to the consumer, working with a vast network of vineyards and wine producers around the world. Laithwaite was where the whole love of wine subscription started for me around 2018.
Following in quite a quick succession were Naked Wines, Virgin Wines, plus The Sunday Times Wine Club, which is almost a carbon copy of Laithwaite’s, as I continue comparing the best online wine clubs.
www.virginwines.co.uk/ took my fancy. I had always been a fan of Richard Branson, and everything he put his expertise into became a success. Plus, the introductory offer was very appealing (are you getting the picture?), with some terrific wines.
Virgin Wines’ main appeal was that you could join with a minimum monthly payment, which helped spread the cost of a case of great wine.
There are three wine clubs: Wine Bank, which lets you pick from a mixed case or an all-white or all-red selection to get you started. All prices shown were correct at the time of publication.
Your wine bank account lets you start with a default of £25 per month, although once your account is live, you can save any amount from £15 to £100 per month, depending on your budget.
There is the Discovery wine subscription, where the good people at Virgin taste all their wines, so you don’t have to trawl through their wine lists to find something special.
They guarantee a great case of wine directly to your door.
You only need to take the starter case, which will have a selection of wines priced at a budget per bottle.
Then, every three months, you will receive a case of your wine type with a minimum 15% discount guaranteed. You can also change the date or the wine delivery because you are always in control.
Last but not least, there are just REDS. This one is in the name. It is just about fabulous red wines.
The driving force behind this club is Matthew Jukes, who road tests just about everything red so that you know you are getting the best quality with great value.
The structure is like the Discovery wine subscription.
Always looking out for a bargain on my wine purchases, I cast an eye over naked wines.
One of the great things about Naked Wines is that they invest in finding talented winemakers around the world and then invest in them upfront.
They pay them fairly so that they don’t have to squeeze costs on quality, so we get great bottles of wine. These are primarily wines that can’t be found anywhere else.
So now we can enjoy over 1000 wines from 21 countries
Naked Wines’ business model differs from most other wine clubs, where a mixture of crowdfunding and Angel funding funds it.
As a member of Naked, they refer to you as an Angel.
Once you become an Angel, you set up a monthly amount, starting from £20 per month. They hold this in your account until you have built enough money to purchase a fabulous case of your favourite wine.
With any wine club, there is a minimum amount that you need to commit to, but all of that is in the not-too-small print in each club. Mostly, it is a pretty nominal amount.
Although this is not a definitive list of wine clubs out there, these are great examples of what you can do to access some fabulous wines at a very reasonable price.
